Abstract

This article provides an in-depth study of the concept of “takfir,” one of the pressing issues in Islam. Takfir is a Sharia term that refers to declaring a Muslim as an unbeliever or excommunicating them from the faith. The article examines the religious, social, and historical significance of this concept, as well as its role in conflicts and disputes within the Muslim community.

The historical foundations of takfir, including the influence of the Kharijite movement, are analyzed, alongside its manifestations in contemporary religious extremism and radical ideologies. The article explores the Sharia conditions and principles for issuing a takfir ruling and explains its place in Islamic jurisprudence. Additionally, it discusses the types of disbelief (kufr), the distinctions between minor disbelief and major disbelief, and the connections between ingratitude and disbelief based on Quranic verses and the sayings of the Prophet.

The author emphasizes the dangerous consequences of extremism related to the misuse of takfir and highlights the harm caused to society by ignorance and radicalism. Furthermore, the a          rticle underscores that the authority to issue a takfir ruling belongs exclusively to highly qualified Islamic scholars. The necessity of fostering a correct understanding of religion based on the principles of peace, unity, and tolerance in Islam is also elaborated.
